Welding 101 w/Rebecca
Rebecca gathered the “class” of 5 or 6 of us around and started off with a safety talk, followed by a brief explanation of how the MIG welder worked. She pulled out a bunch of scrap metal and we started going around the circle, trying progressively more challenging welds. Let
me just say, welding is a lot more complicated than it looks.
When you watch, it’s like
they’re just icing a cake. In reality (at the risk of sounding ignorant), you’re
actually mixing all 3 pieces of molten metal – the bits being welded and the wire electrode. Plus, the spark, spray and angry WHOOSH sound are all a bit startling. Then of course you have to flick your mask into place without losing your hand position, because once your mask is down you can’t see a darn thing.
